CS 115 Reading: Week 10

Lists of Lists

By the end of Week 10, you should be comfortable storing and accessing data in 2D lists (lists of lists).

Suggested readings:

• This material on nested data structures, which has a good visual representation of nested lists
• Sections 8.14 and 8.15 of this material on lists
• The short How to Think Like a Computer Scientist section on nested lists

Functions

These are the same readings that were posted in Week 8. It's still important!

By the end of Week 10, you should be comfortable with:

• Calling functions that other people have written
• Defining your own simple functions
• Tracing the execution of programs with functions
• Understanding parameters and return values

Suggested readings:

• Start with the "Notes: intro to functions" slides posted on Moodle.
• Proceed to the the CS Circles section on defining functions.
• For a more rigorous perspective, read the How to Think Like a Computer Scientist section on functions (stop at "A Turtle Bar Chart")
• Read Chapter 6 of your textbook, but don't get too bogged down in the examples with graphics.
